Etag Fixings Get Involved With RTE’s New Series DIY SOS: The Big Build.

Etag Fixings were part of the upcoming RTE series DIY SOS: The Big Build’ during September. Originally a BBC format running for almost 20 years in the UK, this is the first time the show has come to Ireland. The first show travelled to Dundrum, Tipperary to help the Barry family get into their dream home.

Sinead and her husband Michael Barry had been building their house for the last 5 years when Michael fell ill this year. Michael tragically passed away in March after a very short battle, leaving the home unfinished and Sinead a single mother to three young children.

DIY SOS sent out a local and national call to the construction industry to support the project. Everything involved in the show is donated and voluntary. With the help of local and national businesses, the Barry family were able to get the house that Michael and Sinead always dreamed of.

Etag Fixings were delighted to help and donated fixings, signage, catering supplies and more to the project. With the help of MDS Transport, Etag were able to deliver supplies from their warehouse in Clonee, Dublin to Tipperary efficiently. “To be able to help a family build their dream home and create some stability in a tragic time has been an amazing experience for us at Etag,” Damien Lynch, Managing Director said. “Sinead and her children have their dream home and we would encourage other businesses in the construction industry to get involved in any way they can, when DIY SOS continues in the New Year.”

The New Generation Of Cable Trays – Fusion Run

Understanding their customer’s needs for premium brands, Etag are now an agent for Vergokan Cable Management Systems in Ireland. Vergokan is a specialist manufacturer of cable support systems. Having earned the title by developing an innovative range of products since its foundation in 1982, continued innovation and delivering superior solutions to customers has always been part of Vergokan’s drive. Working alongside customers, we’re always looking to develop new and improved solutions.

Vergokan’s search for continuous improvement has led to the development of a new generation of cable trays: KBSCL FUSION. This innovative solution is strong and reliable, but mostly stands out for its simplicity. The cable trays simply click together, without tools, nuts or bolts (even though this option is available).

The clickable mechanism makes assembly ultra-fast, user-friendly and offers a significant cost saving without sacrificing quality.

Benefits

The patented design of the clickable KBSCL FUSION cable tray saves you time and installation hassle. The KBSCL FUSION tray has many additional features including:

Click: The stand-out feature of the Vergokan cable trays is the revolutionary insert and click system. A true innovation, requiring no additional nuts and bolts!

Thanks to the unique design, the cable trays automatically secure in place once they are interlocked.

Fast: Mounting the KBSCL FUSION is fast. Simplicity and Speed were key and the two lengths of tray simply click together, and are auto-aligned ready to install, considerably reducing installation time, and saving money from labour costs.

Strong: As strong as any bolted joint, the KBSCL FUSION can withstand high loads, with load capabilities similar to that of standard Cable Tray.

The deep perforations provide extra load capacity and less deflection, but also ensure better stability.

On top of that, the longitudinal and transverse perforations are especially useful for bundling cables.

Mounting possibilities on supports are improved because there are more options for securing accessories to the cable trays and then attaching them to the wall.

Reliable: The insert & click design offers a robust connection which remains securely fixed during installation. Traditional fixings can be added if desired, but the maximum admissible load is achieved from the tray’s built in coupling.

Cost Saving: No accessories or tools are required for the installation of the KBSCL cable tray system. Moreover, connecting two trays together can be done very quickly by a single installer.

That means you save on parts, manpower and on time.

The Dangers Of Silica Dust

Silica is a natural substance in varying amounts found in most rocks, sand and clay. In sandstone there is approximately 70% silica and granite approximately 15-30%. It is a major constituent in most construction materials, such as brick, tiles, concrete and mortar. Dust happens on site during many construction tasks such as drilling, cutting, grinding and polishing. The dust can be fine enough to get into the lungs.

The fine dust is commonly known as silica dust and is too fine to be seen with normal lighting. It is the next biggest risk to construction workers after asbestos. Heavy prolonged exposure to silica dust can cause lung cancer and other serious respiratory diseases such as Silicosis. This causes serious breathing problems and increases the risk of lung infections. Another is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which is a group of lung diseases including bronchitis and emphysema. It results in severe breathlessness, prolonged coughing and chronic disability.

There are ways to control the risk of silica dust by reducing the amount in the air. Choosing the right size of material, so there is less cutting. Use silica free abrasives to reduce risks when blasting. Using less powerful tools, for example, swapping from a cut off saw to a block splitter. Also, trying a different method of work like a direct fastening system.

Dust will still occur and there are ways to control the amount that gets into the air, such as water and on tool extraction. Water dampens the dust clouds, however, it would need to be used correctly. There must be enough water supplied at the right levels for the whole time that work is being done. It is not enough to just dampen the material. On tool extraction removes dust as it is being produced with a local exhaust ventilation fixed to the tool. It must have a capturing hood, extraction unit, and tubing and be used to the right specification, High, Medium and Low.

Respiratory Protective Equipment is to be used as well. It must be adequate for the amount and type of dust. The general construction level (in the UK) is an APF (Assigned Protection Level) of 20. This means that the wearer breathes in 1/20th of dust in the air. RP equipment must be suitable for work and not uncomfortable, compatible with other PPE gear, fit the wearer’s face correctly, and worn correctly. If the mask must be tight fitted, the wearer must be clean shaven. All RPE must be cleaned and stored correctly, particularly filters.

Etag have many products that we can help you keep dust down. The Armorgard Cutting Station can significantly reduce dust and eliminates the need for a separate cutting room. Extraction and air filtration units can easily be fitted. We also stock a good range of full and half face dust masks. Respirators are designed to cover the nose and mouth, and filter the air to remove contaminants so they cannot enter the lungs. P2 and P3 face masks offer higher level of protection and at Etag, we can offer fit tests to ensure the dust masks are suitable. It is recommended that the wearer is clean shaven as facial hair has been shown to affect the amount of protection. M class vacuums are especially suited for extracting concrete and rock dust. The vacuums can also be included with tools such as drills, to protect the user’s health.

Why Choose LED?

LED can bring high quality lighting instantly (no waiting to warm up). It has an exceptional lifetime, so you won’t be needing to replace bulbs as often and LED can greatly reduce your energy costs. It may prove more expensive initially but ultimately, you will make your money back by the minimum amount of maintenance needed.

A correct lighting solution can prevent work-related injuries. Natural lighting should take precedence where possible, artificial light must be adequate and properly maintained. Workers should be able to detect obvious hazards and be able to work with eyestrain.

We have numerous options to that will light your site up during the winter. Consider what you will need, for instance, do you need temporary lighting or does it need to be moved often? Do you need a cordless light?

Festoon Kits are a great temporary lighting solution. They can light up a large area by hanging from one area to another. They can light up a dark hallway or corridor and can provide a safe exit for workers. Tripod lights are another temporary light solution as they spread the light over a large area and can illuminate from above. We have double and single light options available depending on how much light is needed.

Freestanding lights are a popular and flexible solution and can be corded and cordless. They are robust lighting for site. Uplights are a combination of freestanding and tripod lighting. They are easy to transport and can light up a large area. They are a great option for plasterers or anyone working in the eves.

Etag Environmental Comittee

At Etag, we are striving to provide more environmentally sustainable products for our customers. Within the construction industry, we are conscious of our carbon footprint and sourcing products for our customers that can decrease our footprint is important to us. 39% of global energy related carbon emissions are attributed to buildings and 28% of this are from buildings in operation – lighting, heating and cooling. However, 11% of carbon emissions are attributed to the construction process, for example, dust creation and fumes in construction.

There are small ways that Etag can help our customers reduce their carbon emissions on site, such as LED site lights. LED can bring high quality lighting to site instantly. They need minimal maintenance and greatly reduce energy costs. We have a wide range of site lights that can help adequately light up the site.

Another way to reduce dust on site is the Armorgard Cutting Station. This multi-purpose mobile cutting unit eliminates the need for a separate cutting room and has a dust extractor connection. There is also an optional extra for a dust extraction or air filtration system. The Cutting Station has a unique and extendable back which creates a much bigger, and safer working space.

Etag also carry a comprehensive set of key insulation products from leading brands, such as fibreglass, PIR and loft leg. As a large percentage of carbon emissions comes from buildings in operation, good insulation can reduce this. Insulation can make renovated and new buildings comfortable and less expensive to run, while minimising energy use.

This year, World Green Building Week’s theme is #BuildingLife. Etag are pledging to to source, produce and transport materials more sustainably. We have already begun this process and aim to make more changes within the year in the products we supply, our own operations and transportation of goods. We recently established an Environmental Committee, and their aim is to make Etag greener for our team and customers.

Growing Etag Fixings strengthens 14 year supply partnership with Rapierstar

Leading UK and Irish fastener distributor Etag Fixings is driving ahead with its ambitious growth plans with the support of masonry and timber screws supplier Rapierstar.

Following its successful expansion into the UK market by establishing a London operation in 2011, Etag UK recently expanded its warehouse in Thames Gateway Park, Dagenham, Essex to 20,000 sq. ft. providing more off the shelf high quality products. There has been huge growth for Etag in recent years, moving from their original premises in Bermondsey to Dagenham in November 2016. This move allowed Etag to grow the business further due to the logistical benefits of East London.

Etag has also upgraded and expanded its main distribution centre in Ireland with a move into a new 33,000 sq. ft. building in Dublin. Accommodating three new warehouses and its head office functions, the new base for Etag underpins its plans to grow market share for fasteners used in all aspects of construction, engineering and right across the industrial sector.

At the heart of Etag’s success and strength is its strategy of partnering with the market’s leading distributors and manufacturers, amongst which is Rapierstar with whom it has partnered since 2004. It supplies Etag with its StarTurn wood screws and StarFix masonry screws, which give customers access to consistently high quality fasteners that are subjected to the most demanding testing regime, both at manufacturing source and in Rapierstar’s UK test centre.

Paul Bonner, Managing Director at Etag Fixings said: “We’ve really differentiated ourselves by becoming the go-to distributor for fasteners and fixings across all technical disciplines, sometimes surprising ourselves with what we can supply. That’s what comes of investing time and effort in developing a great network of trusted suppliers, within which we include Rapierstar, who have made a really positive contribution to our success.

“Rapierstar products are extremely popular with our customers as they seek fasteners that allow them to complete their work easily, safely and to a high standard. Our expert team have a great knowledge of all our products, and Rapierstar have always supported Etag with their high quality screws. We look forward to a continued relationship with Rapierstar as both companies continue to grow in the UK and Ireland”

Etag started life in 2004 as a small distributor of fixings, hand-tools and safety equipment, but it has since grown to offer the most comprehensive product range of its kind in Ireland. These span numerous product divisions including access panels, building supplies, ceiling and drywall, masonry, concrete, formwork, M&E, power tools, roofing, carpentry, signage and protection, and it is already well on the road to replicating its success in the UK from its Dagenham site.

David Furness, founder and MD of Rapierstar adds: “It’s fantastic to see Etag expand and grow and we are delighted to be working closely with Paul and his team to provide customers with the best possible products for the application. With our focus on the UK and Irish markets too, there are strong synergies between Rapierstar and Etag which ensures reliability of supply and means we are both fully in tune with the needs of our markets.”

Operating from its UK HQ and 100,000 sq. ft. bonded warehouse and distribution centre near Macclesfield, Rapierstar is the leading fastener supplier to the British and Irish construction market. With one billion screws stocked at any one time, and supporting sites in Belfast and Norwich, it is able to offer unrivalled supply chain reliability to customers in all parts of the British Isles.

Its own branded products are designed and manufactured to exacting speed of insertion, strength of drill point and high plating standards, with quality assured through comprehensive testing at both its manufacturing plants and its ‘in-house’ R&D test facility. This industry leading regime enables Rapierstar to comply with all appropriate British, European and international quality standards and to continuously improve product performance through innovation.
